Client: Karimoku Case Study
Inspired by traditional shaker furniture, we started the design process as an investigation of the individual elements that together make up the new dining chair. Working with transparency as the main design driver, we separated each element of the design with a goal to create a lightweight chair with excellent comfort. With its otherwise straightforward expression, the split backrest and angled spacers stand out to give the chair character and strength by moving the forces and pressure around the design. Furthermore, the bended backrest embraces the body, heightening the comfort, while also creating rhythm and adding to the dynamic design language of the piece. The result is a lightweight wooden dining chair with roots in both Scandinavian design tradition and Japanese craftsmanship.
