The creative process behind our new Koio x Norm sneaker collab sparked the decision to also design a bespoke bench in collaboration with Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku Furniture Inc. through the sub brand Karimoku Case as a complementary piece for the shoes. Not only is the bench the perfect place to take a seat while tying your shoes – it’s also a reflection of the shoes’ thoughtful details and use of materials as well as an extension of the structures within the recently finished home by Norm in the Mediterranean hillsides of Spain, where it is placed.
Constructed from solid oak and cushioned with a smooth beige suede seat, the bench exudes a certain simplicity and honest design language, which is in many ways the essence of our design thinking – to create minimalist design that stands out and blends in at the same time. The dark stained oak spline joints at each corner of the bench is a typical feature in Japanese furniture design that serves as a reinforcement of the construction where it is most vulnerable. It's a detail that's not merely ornamental but also serves as a functional element defining the design in an understated manner, while giving the bench a refined character.
