Danish summerhouses have long been sanctuaries where the tranquility of nature and the poetry of the landscape become an integral part of life. With natural and sustainable materials, our designs for Heartwood designs weave into the colors and forms of their surroundings, creating a harmonious integration with the place you dream of calling home.
In designing the three summerhouse typologies we have drawn inspiration from the spirit of Denmark’s traditional summerhouse landscapes. Each house is crafted as a tribute to the unique setting it inhabits – the raw power of the coast, the deep shadows of the forest, and the familiar rhythm of the village. With respect for Danish building traditions and a deep understanding of the distinctive character of these areas, the houses are designed to capture the special light, colors, and materials that belong to each setting.
‘Heartwood by Norm’ is expected to be realized in the spring of 2025, with the different typologies adaptable to various plots and locations.
The coastal summerhouse honors nature’s raw beauty, where wind, salt, and sand converge. With a sedum roof and bronzed aluminum façade, it blends into the shifting landscape, patinating gracefully over time. Inside, dark stone floors and timber frames reflect the sandy tones of its surroundings.
With its yakisugi façade and dark materials, the forest summerhouse nearly disappears into the shadows beneath the tree canopy. Inside, lighter materials provide a gentle contrast, with the interiors capturing and reflecting the dappled sunlight that filters through the leaves.
Lastly, the village summerhouse integrates seamlessly with the shifting rhythms and architectural expressions of Denmark’s serene summerhouse communities. The steel roof and plastered façade lend the house a timeless durability that reflects the strength and resilience of these regions. Inside, painted surfaces meet warm wooden elements, creating a soft yet refined atmosphere.
