Forest Retreat

Deep in the Swedish forest, where ridges carved millions of years ago rise gently above a landscape of pine woods, sandy shores, and small beach towns, a traditional wooden cabin has been reimagined into a retreat that feels both timeless and profoundly connected to its surroundings.

Situated deep in the Swedish forests, close to a tiny winter sport area, a small traditional wooden retreat sits on top of a ridge formed millions of years ago. Besides the pine forest covering the fault, the surrounding landscape is a low undulating region of heaths and ridges that rise above gently sloping sandy beaches and small beach towns.

Consisting of a main house with two floors, and a guest annex built in between the tree trunks, the secluded property can accommodate up to three families with each their own suite, as the bottom floor of the main house works as a hotel suite with its own bedroom, bathroom, minibar, and sauna just as the annex is also completely self-contained.

Now completely remodeled on the inside, while the exterior has been opened up with large windows and doors, the space feels visually integrated with the wonderful and completely secluded landscape outside.

Perched on a ridge and embraced by trees, the Forest Retreat is not simply a home, but a sanctuary designed for a slower pace of life, where simplicity, craftsmanship, and nature converge in quiet harmony.

Materials are chosen for their ability to age with dignity, honouring the natural cycles of growth and decay. In this way, the retreat acknowledges impermanence and change, cultivating a profound intimacy with the living landscape.

The retreat consists of a two-storey main house and a guest annex nestled between tree trunks, together accommodating up to three families, each with its own self-contained suite. While the exterior preserves its rustic Nordic identity, the architecture has been subtly opened up with expansive windows and doors that frame the forest and valley beyond.

Conceived for a simple life in rhythm with the changing seasons, the cabin balances rustic charm with quiet refinement, furnished only with the essentials that encourage a slower way of living. While the interior has been fully transformed, the exterior now opens generously to the forest through large windows and doors, dissolving boundaries and creating a sense of seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.

Designing a home is, at its core, an act of restraint. Though the result may seem natural and effortless – a space that feels simple, authentic, and welcoming – the path to such clarity is rarely straightforward. Finding essence requires patience, reflection, and the delicate work of paring back until only what truly matters remains.

Framed by restraint and balance, the dining area is defined by a calm simplicity created using natural materials and curated elements of thoughtful craftsmanship. An oak dining table with a robust, rustic character anchors the space, complemented by finely detailed wooden chairs in varying expressions. Tall, slender cabinet doors line the wall, their vertical rhythm enhancing the sense of height and lightness in the room. Soft plaster walls and oak flooring provide a serene backdrop, while tactile details – woven seats, ceramic tableware, and the grain of the timber – add depth and subtle richness.

The bespoke kitchen, crafted by Danish cabinetmakers Kolon, is designed in the same oak language as the rest of the interior, creating a seamless continuation of material and atmosphere throughout the home. Minimal in expression yet rich in detail, the cabinetry is paired with a tactile stone worktop, balancing functionality with warmth and permanence.

The atmosphere is one of quiet generosity: pared back yet never empty, refined yet unpretentious, rustic yet sophisticated.

By stripping away all that is non-essential, what remains is honest and essential – an architecture that whispers rather than shouts.

Spaces are designed for intimacy and clarity, with tall, slender wooden cabinet doors leading from the main living room into the bedrooms and bathrooms. Their vertical proportions visually stretch the smaller rooms, enhancing the sense of height and spaciousness, while subtle detailing ensures that space is maximized without excess ornament.

The interior material palette is kept deliberately simple, natural, and rustic, dominated by warm oak flooring and bespoke wooden fittings that lend rhythm and refinement to the spaces. These elements are juxtaposed with soft dolomite plaster walls, whose matte surfaces gently absorb and reflect the changing light, adding depth and a subtle sense of movement throughout the day. Occasional stone details further anchor the rooms, introducing a tactile contrast to the wood’s warmth.

Large windows frame views of the valley and forest to the east, south, and west, allowing daylight to flow into the combined living, dining, and kitchen spaces throughout the day. From the gentle filtering of morning light through the trees to the warm glow of twilight, natural light choreographs the rhythm of daily life inside. These shifting atmospheres not only elevate the spirit but also create a constant visual and emotional connection between the indoors, the surrounding landscape, and the stillness of the forest beyond.

Through this transformation, the Forest Retreat becomes more than a home. It extends an invitation to live with intention – embracing slowness, honouring craftsmanship, and drawing strength from the quiet presence of nature.

The inherent warmth and textural qualities in the chosen materials magnify the expression of light and space, making sure that the sparse interior won’t ever feel empty.
